An archipelago in the shallows of the Gulf
Bahrain is a cluster of about 50 islands in the Persian Gulf, connected to Saudi Arabia by the 25-kilometer King Fahd Causeway. The total land area is only 780 square kilometers, making it the smallest Arab state. Its position in the shallow waters between Saudi Arabia and Qatar has made it a natural stopping point for maritime trade for thousands of years.
More on King Fahd Causeway
Opened in 1986, the causeway carries roughly 60,000 vehicles per day and serves as a social pressure valve, allowing Saudi residents easy access to Bahrain's comparatively relaxed social environment.
