Why some flags are so hard to tell apart

Most national flags are drawn from a small number of shared vocabularies, which is exactly why a flag quiz is harder than it looks. The Nordic cross runs through Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, changing only its colours. The Pan-African colours, green, yellow and red, come from Ethiopia and reappear across the continent. The Pan-Arab colours, black, white, green and red, tie together a dozen flags from Jordan to Sudan. Latin America carries a family of horizontal tricolours descended from Gran Colombia, which is why Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela sit so close together.

Then there are the pairs that catch almost everybody: Chad and Romania, Indonesia and Monaco, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, Ireland and Ivory Coast reversed. A flag is a compressed argument about identity, and neighbours often make the same argument.

How this country flags quiz works

Pick ten or twenty rounds. Each round shows one flag, drawn at random from all 195 countries, and four possible answers. Wherever there are enough candidates, the three wrong answers come from the same continent as the right one, so you cannot win by ruling out the obviously distant. Click an answer or press 1, 2, 3 or 4. Press Enter or the Next button to move on.

When you get one wrong, the page shows a one line note about that flag where we have a verified one. That is the part worth reading. Knowing that Mozambique is the only national flag with a modern rifle on it, or that Nepal is the only one that is not a rectangle, is what actually makes a flag stick. Where we do not have a checked note, the page says so rather than inventing one.

At the end you get your score and the list of flags you missed with the correct country beside each one. Your best score is kept in your own browser and never leaves the device.

Flags worth knowing before you play

  • Nepal is the only national flag that is not a rectangle: two stacked triangular pennants.
  • Switzerland is square, and so is Vatican City. No other national flag is.
  • Cyprus shows the island itself in copper colour, deliberately avoiding both Greek and Turkish colours.
  • Mozambique is the only national flag depicting a modern rifle, an AK-47, next to a hoe and a book.
  • Jamaica is the only current national flag with no red, white or blue in it.

If names come easier to you than designs, try naming all 195 countries or the world capitals quiz instead.

Common questions

How many country flags are in this quiz?
All 195. The pool is the 193 United Nations member states plus the two permanent observer states, Vatican City and Palestine, which is the same list the rest of the site uses. Every round draws from the full set, so obscure flags appear as often as famous ones.
Which two country flags are the hardest to tell apart?
Chad and Romania are the usual answer: both are blue, yellow and red vertical tricolours, differing only in the exact shade of blue. Indonesia and Monaco are close behind, identical red over white bars distinguished mainly by proportions.
Which country has the only non rectangular flag?
Nepal. Its flag is two stacked triangular pennants, a shape derived from the separate pennants once flown by rival branches of the royal house. Every other national flag in the world is a rectangle, though Switzerland and Vatican City are square.
What are the Pan-African and Pan-Arab colours?
The Pan-African colours are green, yellow and red, taken from Ethiopia, the African state that was never colonised. The Pan-Arab colours are black, white, green and red, drawn from the banners of historic Arab dynasties. Both families explain a lot of near misses.
Is this flag quiz free?
Yes. No sign up, no account, no ads, and nothing is uploaded. The flags are plain SVG files served from this site, so the quiz keeps working offline once the page has loaded, and your best score stays in your own browser.
Can I use the keyboard?
Yes. Press 1, 2, 3 or 4 to pick an answer and Enter to advance to the next flag. Every control is a real button, so Tab and Space work as well, and the focus ring is always visible.
How do I actually learn the flags?
Attach each one to a story rather than a shape. Portugal's armillary sphere is about navigation, Mexico's eagle and snake is a founding legend, Kiribati's frigatebird is about the Pacific. A flag you can explain is a flag you will recognise a year later.
