Disclosure. Geography is our app and one of the alternatives below. JetPunk is excellent at what it does; this page is for people who want something it does not offer.
What JetPunk is good at
JetPunk is the home of typed recall. Its most famous quiz asks you to name every country in the world in 15 minutes, and its library of about 613,000 quizzes, most of them made by users, covers every list you can imagine. Typing a name from nothing is harder than recognising it on a map, so a JetPunk score is an honest measure of what you know. Points, levels, badges and streaks keep regulars coming back. It is free with ads, and Premium removes them.
Why people look for an alternative
Usually one of three reasons. They want a proper app on their phone, and JetPunk is a website. The points and streaks have started to feel like a chore. Or they have done the big quizzes so often that they can name every country and capital, and realise they know almost nothing about most of them.
Find the right next step
What do you mostly play on JetPunk?
If you mostly play countries of the world
You already do the hardest test in the subject: typing every country from memory. Keep it sharp on our free name all 195 countries quiz, no account and no ads, and try the Africa round, where most people’s gaps are. Then add meaning: Geography takes the countries you can name and tells you what each is like, a few a day.
If you mostly play capitals
Capitals are where typed recall pays off most, and where a reason beats repetition. Our guide to learning world capitals has a trainer that brings back the ones you miss, and the world capitals quiz tests the lot. StudyGe is the best phone app for capitals drills.
If you mostly play flags
For flags, a picture quiz beats a typed one. Try our flag quiz, and the list of flags people mix up, which explains each pair. Worldle’s bonus rounds add a daily flag question.
If you mostly play a bit of everything
If geography is one flavour of trivia for you, Sporcle is the closest match to JetPunk: the same timed formats, a huge library and apps on iPhone and Android. For a calmer daily habit with more depth than trivia, try Geography.
The alternatives
Sporcle: the closest match
The same timed, typed formats and a library just as deep, with more than 200,000 quizzes in the geography category, plus native apps. Free plays are limited and carry ads; Sporcle Orange is $3.99 a month or $43.99 a year on the web.
Pick it if you want JetPunk, but as an app.
Seterra: for map skills
Free click the map and type the name quizzes for every region and layer, from GeoGuessr. The full iOS app has no ads.
Pick it if you can name the countries but could not point to all of them.
StudyGe: the most quiz types on a phone
Locations, capitals, flags, coats of arms, rivers and country statistics, with multiplayer and rankings.
Pick it if you want the broadest drill in one app.
Worldle: two minutes a day
One silhouette, six guesses, bonus rounds on neighbours, capital and flag. Free daily.
Pick it if you want a daily dose rather than long sessions.
GeoGuessr: a different kind of test
Work out where a Street View image was taken. Competitive, and mostly behind a Pro subscription.
Pick it if you want geography as a game, not a list.
Geography: for what the names mean
Not a quiz. Eight short hand written lenses a day, about one country each, on place, history, the news and the links between countries, rated New, Hazy or Clear so spaced repetition can bring back what you are about to forget. iPhone only; a subscription after the free trial.
Pick it if you can name all 195 and want to know them.
What comes after naming them all
If you can type every country in 15 minutes, try this: Chile and Mongolia. You can name them, place them and probably give their capitals. Here is what the Geography app would show you about them. Reveal each lens and rate it.
Chile
Chile is 4,300 km long and barely 180 km wide
Chile stretches from the Atacama Desert, the driest place on Earth, to the glaciers of Patagonia, squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific. It is longer than the distance from Lisbon to Moscow but averages only 180 km wide. That shape gives Chile almost every climate zone and makes internal cohesion a geographic challenge: the north mines copper, the center grows wine, and the south raises salmon in fjords.
More on Atacama Desert
Parts of the Atacama have never recorded rainfall. Its extreme dryness makes it ideal for astronomical observatories; Chile hosts more than half of the world's telescope infrastructure.
Mongolia
The most sparsely populated country on Earth
Mongolia is landlocked between Russia and China, covering 1.6 million square kilometers with a population of only 3.4 million. That ratio makes it the least densely populated sovereign state in the world. The Gobi Desert spreads across the south, the Altai Mountains rise in the west, and vast grassland steppe fills the center, leaving most of the country without roads, fences, or permanent structures.
More on Gobi Desert
The Gobi is not all sand dunes; much of it is bare rock, gravel plains, and sparse scrub. It stretches across southern Mongolia and northern China, forming a natural barrier that historically separated nomadic steppe cultures from sedentary Chinese civilization.
