The eastern Mediterranean's largest island

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, 75 kilometers south of Turkey, 105 kilometers west of Syria, and 380 kilometers north of Egypt. The Troodos Mountains dominate the western interior, reaching 1,952 meters at Mount Olympus, while the Kyrenia Range runs along the northern coast. Between them stretches the Mesaoria Plain, the island's agricultural heartland. Its position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa made it a prize for every Mediterranean power, from Assyria and Egypt to Venice and the Ottomans.

More on Troodos Mountains

The Troodos range is a geological rarity: an ophiolite complex, meaning it consists of oceanic crust and upper mantle rock pushed above sea level by tectonic forces. This makes Cyprus one of the few places where deep ocean floor geology is visible on land. The mountains also contain ten painted Byzantine churches recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
