Enclosed by mountains, drained toward two seas
The Czech Republic is landlocked at the center of Europe, enclosed by mountains on nearly every side: the Ore Mountains and Sudetes to the north, the Bohemian Forest to the southwest, and the Carpathian foothills to the east. It divides into two regions: Bohemia in the west, drained by the Vltava and Elbe flowing north to the North Sea, and Moravia in the east, where rivers run south to the Danube. Prague sits in a basin on the Vltava, sheltered by the Bohemian highlands.
More on Bohemia
Named after the Celtic Boii tribe who inhabited the region before Germanic and Slavic migrations, Bohemia was a kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire and later the Habsburg domains. Its geographic enclosure by mountains gave it a distinct political identity for over a millennium.
