PLACELens 1 of 6

A mainland rectangle and an island capital

Equatorial Guinea is split into two parts: a mainland rectangle called Rio Muni, wedged between Cameroon and Gabon, and the volcanic island of Bioko, roughly 160 kilometers to the northwest in the Gulf of Guinea. The capital, Malabo, sits on Bioko rather than the mainland, a legacy of Spanish colonial administration. Despite the name, the equator passes just south of the mainland territory. Dense tropical forest covers most of both, and Pico Basilé, a 3,012-meter stratovolcano on Bioko, is the highest point.

More on Bioko

Known as Fernando Po under Spanish rule, Bioko is ecologically rich, with endemic primates in its highland forests, and significant oil reserves lie in the waters around it.
