An archipelago that straddles the date line

Fiji scatters more than 330 islands across 1.3 million square kilometers of the South Pacific, though its land totals 18,300 square kilometers. Viti Levu and Vanua Levu hold nearly 90 percent of the population and most arable land. The capital, Suva, sits on Viti Levu's wet southeastern coast; the drier west holds Nadi, the tourism gateway. Fiji lies near the Pacific and Australian plate boundary, which gave it volcanic origins, fertile soil and seismic risk. Reefs ring the islands, including the Great Astrolabe Reef.

More on Great Astrolabe Reef

Located south of Kadavu Island, the Great Astrolabe Reef is a 100-kilometer barrier reef supporting extraordinary biodiversity. Coral bleaching events, particularly in 2016, have damaged sections, but it remains one of Fiji's most important marine ecosystems.
