A volcano still growing beneath the water

Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands, 344 square kilometers of volcanic ridge lying about 160 kilometers north of Venezuela. Mount St. Catherine reaches 840 meters, and Grand Etang fills an old crater near the island's center. Eight kilometers off the north coast, an active submarine volcano called Kick 'em Jenny rises to within 185 meters of the surface. It has erupted at least a dozen times since 1939, and shipping is excluded from the water above it.

More on Kick 'em Jenny

Seismologists at the University of the West Indies monitor it and set the exclusion zone, normally a 1.5 kilometer radius and widened to 5 kilometers when activity rises. Its first documented eruption, in 1939, broke the sea surface; at least eleven more have followed. The volcano lies on the arc where the South American plate slides beneath the Caribbean plate.
