A mountaintop republic in the Italian interior
San Marino is a landlocked enclave surrounded entirely by Italy, set on the slopes of Monte Titano in the Apennines, roughly 10 kilometers from the Adriatic. At 61 square kilometers it is the fifth smallest country in the world. Monte Titano's three peaks, each crowned by a medieval tower, rise to 739 meters, dominating the Emilia-Romagna countryside. Its nine castelli, or municipalities, spread over hills falling toward the Italian lowlands. For all that closeness to the sea, it has no significant natural waterway.
More on Monte Titano
The Three Towers crowning Monte Titano's summits are Guaita, built in the eleventh century, Cesta in the thirteenth, and Montale in the fourteenth. They appear on the national flag and coat of arms. The limestone peak and the historic center below it were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
