A sliver of land between Ghana and Benin
Togo is a strip 56 kilometers wide at the coast, running about 550 kilometers north. Ghana lies west, Benin east, Burkina Faso north. The terrain rises from a short Atlantic shoreline through a central plateau to the Atakora Range in the northwest. Lome, the capital, sits on the Ghanaian border, and its port is the main gateway for transit trade to the landlocked Sahel. The shape, like Benin's, is a relic of colonial partition that cut ethnic groups across borders.
More on port of Lome
Lome's deep-water port, expanded in recent years, is the only one in the region that can handle the largest container ships. It competes with Cotonou, Tema and Abidjan for Sahel-bound cargo and has become a container transshipment hub for West Africa.
