South America's Caribbean outlier

Trinidad sits just 11 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela, close enough that geologists consider it a detached extension of the South American continental shelf rather than a true Caribbean island. Tobago, 30 kilometers to the northeast, is smaller, hillier, and quieter. Together the two islands cover 5,131 square kilometers. Trinidad's proximity to the Orinoco River delta gives its southern coastline a distinctly different character from the rest of the Caribbean: muddy, mangrove-fringed, and rich in hydrocarbons.

More on continental shelf

Trinidad was connected to Venezuela by a land bridge as recently as 10,000 years ago. This geological link explains why the island has South American wildlife, including species found nowhere else in the Caribbean, such as ocelots, armadillos, and over 450 species of birds.
