Where Africa nearly touches Europe
Tunisia holds the northernmost point in Africa: Cap Angela, 140 kilometers from Sicily across the Strait of Sicily. The country is about the size of England and Wales combined. The fertile Tell in the north is watered by the Medjerda River, the central steppe carries olive groves and esparto grass, and the Sahara begins beyond the salt lake of Chott el Jerid. The east coast, along the Gulfs of Hammamet and Gabes, faces the central Mediterranean, crossroads of east-west and north-south sea routes.
More on Chott el Jerid
The largest salt lake in the Sahara, Chott el Jerid stretches over 5,000 square kilometers and is dry for most of the year, its surface shimmering with mirages. In winter, thin sheets of water occasionally cover parts of the chott. It served as a filming location for the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars films.
