South America's only English-speaking country

Guyana sits on the northeastern shoulder of South America, bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. Nearly 80% of its 214,969 square kilometers is covered by tropical rainforest, and the population of roughly 800,000 clusters along the narrow Atlantic coastal plain. The Essequibo River, the country's largest, divides the territory roughly in half and gives its name to the region at the center of a major territorial dispute with Venezuela.

More on Essequibo River

At 1,010 kilometers, the Essequibo is the longest river in Guyana and one of the largest in South America by discharge. The river drains much of the country's interior and its basin is almost entirely covered by primary rainforest.
