Wedged between Romania and Ukraine

Moldova is small and landlocked, squeezed between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south. The Prut River forms the entire western border; the Dniester runs through the eastern half. The landscape is rolling steppe and fertile black-earth plain, part of the same agricultural belt that makes Ukraine a breadbasket. There are no mountain ranges; the highest point barely exceeds 430 meters. A narrow southern strip reaches almost to the Black Sea and stops short, leaving Moldova without a coastline.

More on Dniester River

The Dniester flows 1,362 kilometers from the Carpathian Mountains in western Ukraine through Moldova before emptying into the Black Sea. In Moldova, it defines the boundary of the breakaway region of Transnistria and provides essential water resources and hydroelectric power to the surrounding agricultural lowlands.
