Two square kilometers on the Cote d'Azur
Monaco is the world's second smallest sovereign state, 2.02 square kilometers of coastline pressed between the Maritime Alps and the Mediterranean, with France on its three landward sides. Land reclaimed from the sea has enlarged it by roughly 20 percent: the Fontvieille district went up in the 1980s and the Portier Cove extension is still under construction. The principality divides into distinct quarters: Monte Carlo, La Condamine around Port Hercule, Monaco-Ville on the rocky promontory, and Fontvieille.
More on Port Hercule
Port Hercule is Monaco's only deep-water port, nestled in a natural bay that has sheltered ships since ancient Greek and Roman times. Today it berths some of the world's largest superyachts. During the Monaco Grand Prix, the Formula 1 circuit runs directly alongside the port, with cars passing within meters of moored vessels.
