The westernmost edge of continental Europe

Portugal occupies the southwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, stretching 560 kilometers north to south along the Atlantic with Spain as its only land neighbor. The Tagus divides a greener, hillier north from a drier, flatter south that shades into the Mediterranean climate of the Algarve. Portuguese territory reaches far into the Atlantic through the Azores, 1,500 kilometers west of Lisbon, and Madeira, 1,000 kilometers to the southwest. Cabo da Roca, 40 kilometers west of Lisbon, is the westernmost point of continental Europe.

More on Tagus River

The Tagus is the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula at 1,007 kilometers, rising in eastern Spain and reaching the Atlantic at Lisbon's broad estuary. The river has shaped Lisbon's identity as a maritime city; the Tower of Belem and the Monument to the Discoveries stand at the point where explorers once departed for Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
