Granite and coral across a vast ocean

The Seychelles archipelago spreads 115 islands across 1.4 million square kilometers of the western Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar. The inner islands, Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, are granitic, fragments of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, and the only mid-oceanic islands on Earth made of continental rock. The outer islands are low-lying coral atolls, among them Aldabra, the largest raised coral atoll in the world. Mahe, 27 kilometers long, holds the capital, Victoria, and over 80 percent of the population.

More on Aldabra

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, Aldabra is home to roughly 100,000 giant tortoises, the largest population of the species in the world. The atoll's isolation and protected status have preserved an ecosystem largely free of human disturbance, often compared to the Galapagos for its scientific significance.
