A sliver of Alpine valley between Austria and Switzerland
Liechtenstein occupies 160 square kilometers of the upper Rhine Valley and the Alpine slopes above it, with Switzerland to the west and Austria to the east. The Rhine forms the entire western boundary. The western third is flat floodplain; the eastern two-thirds climb into the Ratikon Alps, reaching 2,599 meters at Grauspitz. All eleven municipalities sit on the valley floor or the lower hillsides. Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries, the other being Uzbekistan.
More on doubly landlocked
A doubly landlocked country is surrounded entirely by other landlocked countries: reaching the sea means crossing at least two borders. Neither Switzerland nor Austria has a coastline. Only Uzbekistan shares the condition, ringed by five landlocked neighbors.
