The southernmost Baltic state and its sand spit
Lithuania is the largest and southernmost of the three Baltic states, bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east, Poland to the south, and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad to the southwest. Its Baltic coastline runs 90 kilometers and includes the Curonian Spit, a 98-kilometer sand dune peninsula shared with Russia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nemunas, the country's longest river, empties into the Curonian Lagoon. Vilnius, the capital, sits in the southeast, unusually far from the coast.
More on Curonian Spit
The Curonian Spit is a narrow, curved sand dune formation separating the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Its dunes reach heights of 60 meters, and the landscape shifts between desert-like sand plains and dense pine forest. Formed roughly 5,000 years ago, the spit has been repeatedly threatened by sand drift and was stabilized through extensive reforestation in the nineteenth century.
