A country shaped like a coastline
Mozambique runs more than 2,400 kilometers along the Indian Ocean shore of southeastern Africa, from Tanzania in the north to South Africa in the south. Across the Mozambique Channel lies Madagascar. The land divides in two: coastal plain south and east, plateaus and mountains west and north. The Zambezi crosses the midsection and empties through a vast delta. Natural harbors, coral reefs, and mangroves made that coast a node in Indian Ocean trade for centuries before the Portuguese arrived in the late fifteenth century.
More on Mozambique Channel
Roughly 400 kilometers wide at its narrowest. It carries shipping between the Indian Ocean and the southern tip of Africa, a strategic maritime corridor for oil tankers and cargo vessels serving southern African trade.
