Uzbekistan is the heart of the Silk Road

Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, three of Central Asia's most storied cities, sit along the ancient trade routes that connected China to the Mediterranean. Uzbekistan occupies the region's center, doubly landlocked (you must cross two borders to reach the sea). The Kyzylkum Desert covers the northwest, while the fertile Fergana Valley in the east is one of Central Asia's most densely populated areas. Geography made Uzbekistan a crossroads; history made it a prize.

More on doubly landlocked

Uzbekistan is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world (the other is Liechtenstein). Every neighbor (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan) is also landlocked, making access to global markets a perpetual challenge.
