A microstate high in the Pyrenees
Andorra occupies 468 square kilometers of the eastern Pyrenees, with France to the north and Spain to the south. It is essentially a set of high valleys carved by the Valira River and its tributaries, rising from 840 meters to 2,942 meters at Coma Pedrosa. There is no airport and no railway, only two main roads, one to France and one to Spain, both crossing mountain passes. Andorra la Vella sits at 1,023 meters, the highest capital city in Europe.
More on Valira River
The Valira is formed by the confluence of two branches, the Valira del Nord and Valira d'Orient, which meet at Escaldes-Engordany near the capital. The river flows south into Spain, where it joins the Segre and eventually the Ebro. The Valira's narrow valley floor hosts the main road corridor and most of Andorra's 80,000 residents.
