PLACELens 1 of 6
A highland republic with two closed borders
Armenia is landlocked, and about half of its 29,743 square kilometers sits above 2,000 meters. The Lesser Caucasus crosses it in ridges that make internal travel slow; Aragats, the highest point, reaches 4,090 meters. Lake Sevan spreads across 1,242 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,900 meters, holding most of the country's fresh water. Of four borders, the two with Turkiye and Azerbaijan have been shut since the early 1990s, leaving Georgia and Iran.
More on Lake Sevan
Soviet planners drained Lake Sevan for irrigation and hydropower from the 1930s, dropping its surface almost 20 meters and cutting its volume by more than 40 percent. Two tunnels bored through mountains, from the Arpa in 1981 and the Vorotan in 2004, now divert rivers into it. The level has recovered several meters, and the operation continues.
