The southern flank of a continental wall

The Greater Caucasus runs 1,200 kilometers between the Black and Caspian seas, and Georgia holds its southern flank. Shkhara reaches 5,193 meters on the Russian frontier, high enough that for most of history armies crossed only at a handful of passes. The range is conventionally read as the boundary between Europe and Asia. West of it Georgia drops to a humid Black Sea coast where tea and citrus grow at the same latitude as Chicago.

More on Shkhara

Shkhara stands at 5,193 meters on the Russian border in the Svaneti region, the highest point in Georgia. The valleys beneath it hold stone defensive towers built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, some still standing in villages that snow cut off from the rest of the country for months at a time, which is why Svan speech and custom drifted so far from the lowlands.
