A fault line that moves toward Istanbul
The North Anatolian Fault runs about 1,500 kilometers across northern Turkiye, from the Karliova junction in the east to the Aegean. Since the Erzincan earthquake of 1939 it has ruptured in a sequence of seven large shocks that stepped steadily westward, reaching Izmit in 1999, which killed more than 18,000 people. The next unbroken segment lies beneath the Sea of Marmara, immediately south of a city of roughly 16 million.
More on Sea of Marmara
The fault splays into strands under the Marmara and the strand nearest Istanbul has not produced a major rupture since 1766, so strain has been accumulating for over two centuries. Turkish building codes tightened after 1999, but successive construction amnesties legalized millions of noncompliant structures, which is the reason the risk is argued about in political terms rather than geological ones.
