Where Montenegro sits on the map
Montenegro is an Adriatic country of roughly 13,800 square kilometers, slightly smaller than Northern Ireland, tucked between Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. From a narrow coastal strip, the land rises abruptly through the Dinaric Alps to peaks above 2,500 meters. The Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like inlet ringed by steep mountains, is the country's most recognizable feature. The interior is cut by deep canyons, including the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe at 1,300 meters.
More on Bay of Kotor
Often called Europe's southernmost fjord, the bay is technically a submerged river canyon, not a glacially carved fjord. Its four interconnected basins create a winding waterway surrounded by medieval towns, Venetian fortifications, and mountains that drop almost vertically to the water. The old town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
