Where Hungary sits on the map
Hungary lies in the Carpathian Basin, a lowland bowl ringed by the arc of the Carpathian Mountains, which the country itself does not reach. The Danube bisects it north to south, separating hilly Transdanubia in the west from the Great Hungarian Plain, or Alfold, in the east, one of Europe's largest flatlands. Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake at 77 kilometers long, sits in the west. Budapest straddles the Danube where the highlands meet the plain, a position that made it a natural capital.
More on Great Hungarian Plain
The Alfold covers more than half of Hungary's territory, extending into Serbia, Romania, and Slovakia. Once a vast grassland grazed by distinctive grey cattle, it was transformed into agricultural land through 19th-century river regulation projects that drained marshes and redirected the Tisza River.
